Welcome Message from Mr. Kern

kern10-11Welcome to Sugar Creek Elementary School!

Sugar Creek Elementary is the largest and newest of the elementary schools in the district. Sugar Creek Elementary School was opened in the fall of 2000 as the third elementary school in our community, serving families from the western portion of our district. We are dedicated to setting high expectations for our students and helping students at all levels reach their best potential.

Sugar Creek Elementary offers a wide-variety of programs that are unique to our school. We are large supporters of state academic competitions and also provide many opportunities for our students in the visual and performing arts. We also have exciting after-school programs to extend learning beyond the normal school day for our students.

Along with our sister schools, we are excited to offer our students to have a 1-1 technology device available for use during the school day.  In grades K-5 that device is an Apple iPad.  Students in grade 6 have MacBook laptops available.  New this year to Sugar Creek and the other Southern Hancock Schools is the opportunity to use our Virtual Learning capacity to keep the learning going during inclement weather situations and our schools are closed!

You should expect that your child/children will be challenged at an appropriate level that will stretch them academically. I challenge you to become involved in your child's school life by becoming active in our PTO, and/or volunteering on occasion at the school.

I would like to share a little bit about me.I am very proud to be joining the Sugar Creek team as the principal! I am excited to be a part of such an outstanding school and learning community, and to be “filling the shoes” of Mr. Strangeway! For the past fifteen years, I have served as the principal at New Palestine Elementary School. Prior to that I served as principal at Eden Elementary School and Waldron Elementary School. My wife is a retired kindergarten teacher, and we have two adult children, Ryan and Brittany. Both kids and their spouses are also teachers. They have blessed us with two grandchildren with two more grandchildren on the way during the 2014-15 school year! I have had many exciting opportunities during my professional career that I will cherish forever! These include working in the Southern Hancock Schools, participating in an international principal exchange program with Argentina during the 2012-13 school year, working with the Indiana Principal Leadership Academy, and serving as leader in both the state and national professional associations for elementary school principals!

We pride ourselves as a school on good two-way communication with our families. Please take time to read our electronic communications from the office and your child's teacher. We are always available to answer any questions you may have regarding your child's school progress academically, socially and emotionally at Sugar Creek Elementary.

In my fifteen years in the Southern Hancock Schools, I have developed an outstanding respect for the high expectations for excellence on the part of both staff and community. This strong partnership is critical to the success of our students and school. I encourage you to become an active partner in your child's learning!  It is an honor and privilege to work with your child and your family as the principal at Sugar Creek Elementary School!
